For as far back as it can remember, humanity has been fascinated by the complexity and diversity of the living world. This was first the belief of all animist religions. Then scientists and philosophers embarked on a dizzying quest to understand the profound nature of life, seeking to unlock its mysteries. Thus was born the idea of the existence of a unity of the living. A concept that took root in the sciences and was also developed by philosophy, esoteric doctrines and poetry to explore the links uniting all living beings.
